Trick to getting new DNS to 'stick'

New owner of Mag254. Freezing frequently so trying to TS using tips/tricks in threads.
One suggestion found was to set DNS to 8.8.8.8 (manual input) for Google's servers. DHCP auto.
Keep inputting that in the appropriate fields in the network settings and hitting the save (or equivalent) button and a message box pops up : "settings saved".
When I pull up network info, it shows that the DNS had reverted back to gateway.

I don't know what else to do to change the DNS- help?
I have read multiple freezing threads what percentage of people are not having good luck with this?
