Remote Not Very Responsive

So I purchased my first android box today and got the Avov TVOnline+. I'm finding that the remote is pretty much useless unless you're 4-5 feet from the box. Is there another option here? Is this a common complaint with this remote? Very frustrated with the remote aspect of it.

Is there a way of finding out easily which android remotes are compatible with Avov? There seems to be quite a few out there. Not sure which one to get.
