EDID Problem

First let me start by posting what EDID is.
c/p Extended Display Identification Data (EDID) is a metadata standard that lets display devices like monitors, televisions, and projectors communicate their capabilities to the video source. When using HDMI, the EDID from your television tells the video source what the dimensions of the screen are.
Basically it's copy protection. EDID is easy to lookup online.

The problem is that it can prevent using your STB box HDMI output, from working on an older TV or splitting the box output to a second TV, usually an older device. I'd post a website with more info, but dont know if that would break forum rules.

In my case, I've using my STB output on two TVs using one box. In the past I had to split the HDMI and convert HDMI, one signal to component and run that though a Cat 5 balun to my bedroom TV.
I like to visit thrift stores and see what toys I can find. Recently I scored a box of expensive HDMI cat baluns in almost new condition.

My present problem is now caused by EDID. I've tried an EDID emulator without success.

My livingroom TV works fine, but I am having in and out signal problems with my older flatscreen in the bedroom.

Open to ideas?

How do you use the tv in the bedroom? if the box is located in the living room ?
Both televisions are sharing the same programming/screen at the same time i guess right ?

how do you use it? i've seen this working in restaurants where they have one set top box, and multiple tvs... but with a different location of each tv... what would be the use ?

Cheers buddy, nice to see you active

I'm single, so In this case I use a switch. When I'm in the living room, it's switched to the livingroom. When I move to the bedroom, I switch it to run to that room via cat5. When I converted it to component, I used a splitter and the EDID problem didnt happen, because the EDID problem doesnt exist with component. The problem with converting one side of a split signal is that you have to convert the video to component and use a digital output for the audio. Then you have to combine them on the other end with, in this case, an anologue audio input on the TV. Much more complicated and more equipment. Look at the Cat5 part of my original post.

If your interested, do some research on Cat5 Baluns.

I'm sure you can get more expensive equipment that will solve the problem, but my bedroom TV is kind of old.

I can tell now wow, but im still wondering... how do you manage the box from each location.. ? same remote? or the remote of each tv?

Cat5 Baluns <- analog to network? you got me bro.. thats high end stuff

One of the things I've been trying to solve is the consistancy problems I've been having. I'm thinking it might be caused by interference, so I bought a couple of HDMI cables with some things, I'm not sure what they're called, but I think the picture will help you understand the problem. I think they're called grommets, but dont quote me. I've run one from the TV box to the switch and the second from the switch to the cat5 balun. So far so good, but I'll have to get back to you on this later.

Hi TinieBlaz
I run one HDMI to the switch and run HDMI cables from the switch to both TV and Cat5 Balun. The Balun via Cat5 runs to my bedroom. The Balun on the other end converts the signal to HDMI and on to the TV. You can either have one remote to take from room to room or have a second remove with a dongle in the TV box. You might want to give a splitter a try, then you can watch the same show in both rooms at the sametime.

My second choice, the first set of HDMI cables, simply weren't fast enough. Well, if the new stuff works, I guess we'll have to guess which idea was right :)

The large, round plastic piece on an HDMI cable is called a ferrite bead or ferrite core. It's also sometimes referred to as a choke. These ferrite cores help to reduce electrical interference by increasing the impedance of the cable, effectively acting as a low-pass filter

Thanx for the info. Years back I ran a RG6 to my bedroom, so I could watch my Dish TV and not pay for a second tuner. I bought a couple for about $3. They totally stopped the interference problem.

It's probably to early to tell, but I think the better HDMIs cables are working. I dont know if this is truely an EDID problem ,as much as it is a better high speed HDMI cable problem. I've been running it all day an so far, little or no problems. Next I'll try my HDMI splitter and see if I can get it to work on both TVs at the same time.
