Connection Question with wifi

Hello, new to forum and appreciate the information shared on the site. That being said I have read stickies on installation and it seems pretty straightforward. What I havent seen addressed is whether you need to set up box directly to modem through cables for initial installation or it can i do initial setup from wifi connection? I purchased a d-link dwa160 dual band adapter as recommended by several 254 users. By all accounts it seems I should do initial set up directly to modem/tv before I proceed to wifi setup?

I would use straight cat 5 cable to modem for best internet connection not to sure about that wifi connection.
