As far as I understand to get started I need a box (reading about a few on here, thanks for the info!) and a subscription to a channel list (via donation?)... not too clear on that part but I'll keep reading up.. thanks!

I purchased a Mag 524W3 and I did a speed test on the Box following procedure, Settings > Reload Portal > Yes > then immediately hit the 3 bar button on the remote to get to Embedded then Settings and Speed Test. It is showing only 15 Mbps but I am hard wired to my Router that is sending ~750 Mbps (I confirmed this on my laptop, then used the same cable to connect to the Mag 524.
This is weird so I am looking...
