Protecting Mag devices against lightning spikes

A friend of mines box, got hit frying his box and damaging the Hdmi input, interestly enough, the TV still works. So I am assuming the spike came through the telephone lines(Internet)

I noticed this boxes are very vulnerable, it's matter of time.

I would like to heard ideas how you guys are protecting your devices!

I wouldnt have mine plugged into the phone line if it was storming.
Just saying. If its lightning and storming, unplug it.
I lost a router that way. Was storming while I was gone, so sometimes it happens when you can't help it

Some surge protectors have phone line protection and coax protection.

I bought an large surge protector with battery back up, it has coverage on the items plugged up to $2000. Lots of storm and no issues..knock on wood!!!

If lightning wants in, you're not gonna stop it. period

A common surge protector will stop voltage spikes and surges, but not the violent, catastrophic burst of current from a close lightning strike. Direct lightning current is simply too big to protect with a little electronic device inside a power strip, or even a hefty UPS unit. If your UPS or surge protector is in the way of the lightning's path, all or part of the lightning will just flash over or through the device - regardless of the amount of capacitors and battery banks involved.

The best, and cheapest, way to protect your stereo, television, computer, or any electronic appliance is to unplug all power, telephone (modem), and antenna connections during a thunderstorm.

This is due to the thoughtlessness of North American standards. In my home fiber technique was caught cable grounding in pipe outside sink, which is a copper and then was joined in plastic. I asked him why imitate work and he told me that it must. If the technician in Europe do this in the same way, he will surely lose his job because there is a real danger to kill someone ..... The next day the company sent an observer to check what I am not happy and he tried to argue with me. I gave him the choice to do it right or to collect cables and disappears. He put real grounding rod after seeing that I do not care for its performance.
