View Full Version : ssd internal hard drive
I'm going to purchase a u5 and take advantage of the sale running now. Would I be able to to purchase a ssd internal hard drive for the u5 instead of the hard drive offered in the sale? Will it physically fit and connect the same as the one offered? And lastly will I notice the difference?
Thanks

It's actually a SATA Disc Drive, while the SSD (Solid State Drive) is different design/shape.
Most Laps Tops use a SATA drive. In fact I have taken the SATA out of two non-functioning laptops, one is an Hitachi disc drive and the other is Toshiba disc drive.
Both are 5400 RPM with 120 GB and both connect to the U5 the same, as all SATA drives would.
The item listed at Global BuzzTV website is the Mobile SATA Disc Hard Drive @ 5400 RPM and 1TB, it's also listed as a SATA 6 version, which is probably the latest/newest version.
The maximum allowable for the U5 would be 2TB, but the larger the drive the more chances of failure and or shorter live span.
If you experiment with an old laptop drive, there will be a plastic cover that will need to be removed from that drive after it's been taken out of the laptop. Just a couple tiny screws to remove it.
These used laptop drives will have data on them as per usage with the laptop. Almost all of that data will be encrypted and not accessible unless reinstalled onto the laptop and probably Partition formatted. That means you will not be able to delete all the unwanted data to free up the drive space (GBs), which doesn't take up alot of GBs but it is significant.
And ensure to handle these drives by the edges only. There will be instructions on handling procedures and specs written on the drive housing.
I think that Mobile SATA Drive will be more user-friendly when it comes to handling, but be sure to check on that depending on what SATA drive you choose.

My buddy uses a 3GB SSD drive with no issues.
SATA runs hot so you might need a fan.
I have a SATA in my 4900 but it sits on a cooler.

Are there SSD slots on these devices?
I don't think I have ever checked.
Good tips BTW :)

You don't need to do anything.Just plug it in.
Format it exfat first though.
The New Power Station requires an SSD as it's NVMe.

I just swap the drives on my laptop.
I have EaseUS loaded on USB to format the drive to ExFAT.
Just to update, I bought the u5/128 with no extra hard drive. I have a few how to questions, but I will save those for another thread. I will be looking into obtaining a ssd drive.
Thanks again everybody,

Use SSD.
It runs cooler and faster.

You can get a solid state with the same connection as the SATA, I ran the 2 TB in mine and it got hot as blazes with the cover on. I got the SSD and it is cool as a frosty pop.
Can't post picture.

Got mine at Canada Computers for around $150 when the U5 first came out.
Cooked the SATA drive that came in the bundle pretty fast.
