California Gov. Gavin Newsom signed an order Wednesday that aims to end the sale of new gasoline and diesel-powered passenger cars in the state by 2035.
This news just came out few hours ago.
This comes partly due to the fires we are seeing that are engulfing the entire west coast.
npr.org has a report about it which I found the most accessible.

There is some dispute or debate about it all. Some say electric cars are obviously better for the environment, but them factorys that make these cars and the batteries is far from eco-freindly.
I myself think that the day will come that gas/diesel engines will be gone, but we still have a ways to go to get there.
I say good for California in getting this ball rolling, good job :)
It will be a rough road ahead but we have to start somewhere and soon !
