Opel GT DSC00153 1965

The Opel GT is a two-seat sports car first presented as a styling exercise in 1965 at the Paris and Frankfurt motor shows, and introduced as a production model late in 1968 by Opel, a German subsidiary of General Motors. It relied partly on components from the contemporary Opel Kadett B and had a body made by French contractor Brissonneau & Lotz.

Its styling has been likened to the 1968 Chevrolet Corvette which went on sale in September 1967.

Although the life of the GT was limited to six model years, after a 34-year hiatus it returned as a 2007 model based on the Saturn Sky, and was built alongside it in Wilmington, Delaware, USA. The plant was scheduled to close in July 2009, ending production of the GT, and its siblings.

1964 1/2 Mustang - A First Rate Introduction

In 1964 production was in high gear for the newly designed 1965 Ford Mustang. The highly anticipated Ford Mustang was honored by being named the Indianapolis pace car of 1964 and Ford stepped it up to accommodate the rising status of their new design. A special convertible version was adapted as the pacer. It was manufactured in white with a blue stripe on the hood and trunk. Ford also made 230 extra pace cars, available in convertible and hard top. The 64 1/2 convertibles had a 289cid engine, and the hardtops came with the less powerful 260 V-8. Thirty five convertibles were sold to dealerships and 195 hardtops were given out in dealer contests held in April of 1964.

It is hard to believe that the original Mustang, so popular and built in such big numbers, would have such low production in the most collectible engine and body style combination. But that’s what we see here in Jose Luis Abraham’s MCA Concours Gold 1964½ classic. This first year Mustang is so rare and hot it’s a Mustang and a half.

It’s a K-code. It’s a four-speed. And, perhaps even more unusual, is the numeral “9” beneath “AXLE” on the original door data plate. This digit decodes a set of stump-pulling 4.11:1 gears in a “single track” (as opposed to an Equa-Lock) 9-inch rear end.

In those cases you would need to use a grinder and grind off the rivets that hold the ID tag and replace it with the correct tag so it can be registered.
You would need a donor car for this and of course a grinder :)

This is a story without the usual ending. In the classic barn find narrative, our hero unearths a long-lost iconic muscle car in some barn in rural Iowa discovered after accidentally overhearing a lunchtime conversation. He then completes a meticulous restoration that wows the assembled throng, who sings his praises, making him an instant celebrity.

None of that happens here.

Like the drag racer who said, “I’d rather be lucky than good,” this story is all about being at the right place at the right time and sweetened with a heaping tablespoon of dumb luck.

When I somehow managed to bluff then-Car-Craft-Editor Rick Voegelin into hiring me as a wet-nosed feature editor in the spring of 1979, my future ex-wife, Susan, and I moved to Burbank, California. After a few weeks of learningthe art of negotiating L.A. freeways, we began the search for the car she wanted-a red ’66 Mustang fastback. While I harbor no ill feelings toward Fords, I secretly planned to convince her that an early Camaro was a far better choice. We spent a whole Saturday looking at a rash of unworthy Mustangs.

After dismissing all the previous Fords, there was a Camaro just around the corner that we investigated. After a quick once-over, the Camaro appeared a bit shabby but straight. During the testdrive, the engine detonated badly, but I had already decided to buy the car-with her money. The Camaro was fitted with what I assumed was a 275hp 327, a Powerglide with a nonstock but OE shifter that looked like it came out of an early Vette, front disc brakes, 15-inch Rally wheels, and dual exhaust. The Granada Gold color and gold interior were lame, but we drove the Camaro away for $1,250.
