Only true Android os TV's will allow you to Install 3rd party apps.
Most employ a proprietary version of the Android TV os, and only allow approved app's, usually from their "store".

Many higher end Sony's are "Full" Android based units.
LG uses WebOS
Samsung uses Tizen
Some brands incorporate Roku (RokuOS)

An open AndroidTV system will list the same attributes as an android STB;
- Quad Processor
- Graphics co-Processor
- Ram (usually 2 Gig)
- Storage Memory (8 Gig. minimum)
- Android TV operating system with Version 7.1 or higher.

So if you want true freedom like an Android STB, but built in to your TV, then go for a Sony...IMO!
