To be honest, it doesn't look like there is a 'group of death'. Maybe one or two strong teams in a group, but that's about it. Group B and D look interesting.

Brazil has it easy, Argentina's group is the closest to the group of death but like Dara said no clear group of death
I could see Iceland winning that group with Argentina. I agree that Brazil has it easy, but Costa Rica could bite them, and they have no fear. Coverage in the US will be on Mexico, who are in with Germany... I just don't see Mexico coming out of that group. In all, a big CONCACAF fail, and with no USA or Italy, low ratings in the US.
Gut feel... Germany wins it all, again. If Argentina can come out of its funk, they might contend. Ronaldo will put Portugal on his back, but it won't be enough.

Brasil is playing too well so i see the final as Brasil vs Germany!!!Dark horse is France and Argentina!!
Germany will probably win this again, but I'd like to see a Germany-Argentina final, but I don't think that will happen as they probably will be on the same side of the knockoff brackets. Fox Sports is pushing Mexico hard, as the USMNT is not in this, but I still can't back them... mostly due to their fans and that silly thing they do with goal kicks. I want to see Iceland go deep as well.

Germany is strong, I see either a Germany vs Brazil Final or a Argentina vs France!! Also looking for this world cups cinderella Team...In Brazil it was Costa Rica and In Russia I see an African country surprising a lot of people!!
OMG. Ronaldo gets a hat trick and pulls Portugal into a tie with Spain at 87'. Amazing free kick goal just outside the penalty box... bend it like Ronaldo lol.

ARG-ISL .... game is lit. 1-1 at 25' . "Messi has a revolver at his head... the World Cup" - Argentina Coach.
Edit: I missed the second half, but probably not much other than that... draw. Best result of my sentimental favorites. I see that Messi didn't make a PK.
1st round.... Ronaldo > Messi even though their teams tied.
theuduk
06-17-2018, 05:21 PM
Another stunning result Germany 0 Mexico 1
Some teams will have a good talking too or possibly a spanking.
Yes, a huge upset. Again I missed the second half, but Germany just let down for a second, and Lozano had a great shot. If Mexico can get over that 4th game jynx, I could see them go deep in the knockouts.
Another draw. Brazil and Switzerland. So far, no one really standing out, other than Russia with their 5-0 game (they are supposed to get into the knockouts as the host).
Things haven't played out the way I thought they would. I believed either Germany, Brazil or Argentina would have a break out performance in their initial game.
Nice.... finally a real result on a final goal. England will win on a header in stoppage time.
Tunisia played them well, but that final header in stoppage was the decider.

Japan - Colombia is very competitive. Colombia playing with 10 players
This is the first World Cup in which as many as four South American teams failed to win their opening game.
Japan is the first Asian team to beat South American opposition at the World Cup.
Argentina is toast. Put some butter on it, Messi.
3 - 0 no less. I didn't see that one coming!
Iceland is looking like toast as well. Argentina might have a chance if they can trounce Nigeria.
Mexico goes up dos a cero, with Chicharito's 50th international goal.
--
Not yet over... Korea scores at '94.
--
Final. 2-1 Mexico. They just need Sweden to win or draw to go to the knockout... but Sweden plays desperate Germany. That goal could be a problem if there is a goal differential issue.
Germany down 1-0 to Sweden at the half. Rut-rho.
Yes, Mexico has to be cheering Sweden on. It doesn't look like Germany has much of a chance for a repeat.
Germany scored...tied up...1-1.
So much pressure by Germany, but they can't finish, so far. Sweden is on their heels.
Germany pulls it out of their butt. LOL.
Amazing goal by Kroos.
Unreal! They do it in extended time...
It's amazing that Mexico can still be out of the tournament, with a loss, and huge win by Germany over Korea.
They really needed Sweden to do it there to take the pressure off...
England curbstomping Panama, 5-0 in just the first half. I don't think that the USA men's team would be that bad, but it's their fault for not winning games they should have won, easily.
6-1 final. England kicked butt.
Japan 1-0-0 vs Senegal 1-0-0 at 11:00 AM ET
Senegal just took the lead 2 - 1 over Japan in the second half.
Good game! Japan just tied it 2 - 2.
They played to a draw. Both teams remain unbeaten.
Colombia taking charge now, 2-0, over Poland, and Falcao gets his WC goal. Poland will be out if this result holds.
--
Now 3-0, late
Yup, curtains for Poland, 3 - 0. Just stoppage remaining.
Uruguay is leading Russia 2 - 0 in the second half. Coming in, they were both 2-0-0.
Uruguay cleaned Russia's clock, 3 - 0.
Ronaldo escapes a red card. But I think the iran player dived.
It looks like Portugal will get Russia, better than against Uruguay.
Earlier, CR7 had his PK stopped. He must have been tired due to Iranians making lots of noise outside his hotel room.
Un-oh... hand ball by a Portugal player in the zone.... tied 1-1.
Live standings flipped.
So Spain will now play Russia, and Portugal plays Uruguay. Will Suarez have a muzzle?
Suarez needs one goal to tie Miguez. What are your thoughts on the matches? Russia and Uruguay winning?
Suarez needs one goal to tie Miguez. What are your thoughts on the matches? Russia and Uruguay winning?
To be honest, I haven't seen any of the Group A games, but it seems to be the one group designed to be easy to get Russia into the quarters. Spain will have a much easier job than Portugal, and if Ronaldo has a bad day (like today), Uruguay should win.
Denmark 1-1-0 vs France 2-0-0 at 10:00 AM ET today. Denmark can advance to the knockout stage if they can pull it off, but France won't make it easy.
0 - 0 at the end of the first half. France had 5 attempts; Denmark 2.
I think Denmark and France are in, no matter what happens in the other game (Peru winning 2-0). If Denmark wins, they win the group.
I'm looking forward to the Argentina-Nigeria match, but Iceland could spoil it for Argentina by winning with a better goal differential. Croatia is in, no matter what...could they just take a dive?
--
Denmark-France is a draw, so France wins the group. Croatia has to lose big to lose the group, like 0-5, so they will draw Denmark. France has to wait to see who they play, but I guess they are hoping to get Iceland instead of Argentina or Nigeria.
Messi opens at 14'... on a long pass just outsprinting his challenger, then the finish. Golazo!
Maradona:
https://pbs.twimg.com/media/Dgo1WzOU0AEabM-.jpg
BYW, it was the 100th goal of the world cup. He did just hit the post on a free kick, after the keeper just touched the ball for the save.
Nigeria ties... after a penalty in the box during a corner.
Croatia just scored... 1-0.
Iceland ties 1-1. There was a close call for Argentina with a possible hand ball in the box... lucky.
Argentina scores!!!! Marcos Rojo! 87'
Croatia finishes Iceland... 2-1.
Full time Group D.
Croatia wins the group, and Argentina moves on as well. Nigeria and Iceland were game teams.
So.... France vs. Argentina, Croatia vs. Denmark.
Thanks for the updates, dara. I went to a local watering hole to watch the games. For me, the biggest surprise was that neither France nor Denmark could muster a goal.
Croatia certainly looks strong, btw.
Yeah, didn't see France Denmark, but I heard that they were just playing kick the can, and not really wanting to make a big deal. Games take a lot of them, so they basically just wanted to take the bye (or just avoid having to play Argentina, some how.) Argentina is pretty vulnerable, IMO.
The early games look more consequential tomorrow, after that not so much, maybe Brazil. I'd like to see Colombia to get in.
At the half, group F... no scores.
Mexico and Germany are still in. I think Sweden had the better chances, but Memo Ochoa has been outstanding. It didn't look all that exciting with Germany-Korea.
Sweden strikes first, 51'
Live standings: Sweden, Mexico.
Sweden scores again on a penalty. 2-0.
A lot of tri fans are tightening...
Meltdown in Mexico... Que lastima, lo siento. Own goal, 3-0.
18+ minutes and Germany only needs to score, but Korea is game.
Korea scores in stoppage off a corner. 2 minutes left in stoppage.
Germany done, 2-0, empty net goal by Korea.
So, Sweden wins the group, on the head-to-head victory over Mexico. What a group.
Worst loss by Germany in Russia since Stalingrad.
Unreal... What the heck happened to Germany!
Unreal... What the heck happened to Germany!
That makes three straight WC champs to not advance to the Group of 16. I think some of it was poor defense, but there isn't much fire power. Maybe Argentina will capitalize, as Germany has been their biggest bane in the WC in the Messi era.
Brazil scores near the end of the first half to lead Serbia 1 - 0.
Brazil scores again with 10 minutes remaining, 2 - 0.
It doesn't look good for Serbia, even if the Swiss lose, they need to outscore Brazil by 2.
So the matchups:
Brazil v. Mexico
Sweden v. Switzerland
Mexico does weird things after big losses, but I think they will be beaten soundly by Brazil. SWESWI is a toss up to me.
Ticos are going out with class... 2-2 vs. Switzerland
Brazil tops Group E with this 2 - 0 win over Serbia.
Yeah, I see Brazil over Mexico as well...and a toss up in the Sweden / Switzerland match.
Tomorrow, I think England will edge Belgium for Group G. I think Colombia beats Senegal to get in, but I'm not too sure about Japan winning the group outright.
England / Belgium should be a decent game. They're both undefeated.
For today, I'm thinking
Japan over Poland
Columbia over Senegal
England over Belgium
Tunisia over Panama
Half time in the first two game projections above, and the score is the same for both, 0-0.
Poland has taken a 1-0 lead over Japan.
Finally, Colombia scores. Valderama is happy.
Currently, Colombia, Japan are in. ('75)
Columbia 1 - 0 over Senegal now.
The Senegal Columbia match is really on a razors edge. Senegal has been closer more often than Colombia, but all it needs is just one touch.
Senegal maybe has the 2nd spot , due to less yellow cards, but I dont know.
Final...
Colombia and Japan are in.
Well, wrong on one (Poland over Japan, 1-0) and right on one (Columbia over Senegal, 1-0).
Yeah, Senegal had more yellow cards. Eliminated by the FIFA Fair Play tiebreaker. If that was still even, it would have gone to a coin flip.
Two yellow card difference. Fouls are subjective, I'd rather them get together to play into the knockout round, but that's too hard with the game only 4 days away.
Yeah, it would be hard to schedule anything ahead because you'd never know who'd be in contention until almost the last minute. I do agree with you: The subjective elements should be minimized as much as possible.
Belgium just scored at '50, when I just turned on the game. If it ends in a tie, the same Fair Play rule will apply as well, but they won't eliminate anyone here.
I did see a short clip where Japan just played 'hold the ball' and granted the win to Poland, as long as they didn't have to force a yellow card situation or score more against them. Maybe not fair play for Senegal, huh?
Yeah, I wasn't thinking enough about a play it safe strategy. I've never liked it much, but it is used quite often.
So the group stage is over....
Belgium wins the group, gets Japan
England will get to play Colombia.
Looking at the brackets, it looks like the loser of that last game got the better draw. If they both win, England will play the winner of Sweden/Switzerland, and Belgium will play the winner of Brazil/Mexico. Maybe that's why they didn't play all that hard.
Here is the KO bracket...
https://www.foxsports.com/soccer/fifa-world-cup/bracket
Looking at the brackets, it looks like the loser of that last game got the better draw. If they both win, England will play the winner of Sweden/Switzerland, and Belgium will play the winner of Brazil/Mexico. Maybe that's why they didn't play all that hard.
Yeah, again, it's the play it safe strategy. England was probably looking ahead, taking the safest route.
The Saturday games are real hard to pick, any of those could get to the semi final. Argentina wining over France would lead to either a border war, or MessiRonaldo.
Sunday Group, the clear favorite coming out of that would be Spain.
Monday Group: Brazil
Tuesday, it will be the winner of England/Columbia will be in the Semifinal.
My dream final: Argentina v. Spain.
At least from here on in, there's no more sitting on one's heels. Argentina / Spain would be a cool final. I definitely want to see Spain do a number on Russia on Sunday.
Here are the odds per cbssports:
Brazil 3-1
Spain 4-1
Belgium 13-2
France 8-1
England 8-1
Croatia 12-1
Argentina 12-1
Uruguay 20-1
Portugal 25-1
Colombia 30-1
Mexico 30-1
Switzerland 40-1
Russia 60-1
Sweden 80-1
Denmark 80-1
Japan 250-1
Cool... It'll be interesting to see how those pan out. I have Brazil at the top, too, picking them in the poll here.
Your dream game (Argentina v Spain) is contingent on Argentina getting by France tomorrow. (Obviously, doh...) I doubt that will be an easy outcome, but I bet it will be fun to watch. Will Messi be a dominating force or will France find a way to contain him? I'm psyched for the game!
It's interesting to me that Higuain isn't starting.
Higuain and Aguero haven't done much so far in the WC, but they could catch fire at any time, so it is a bit perplexing.
France score first on a penalty. I'm not that sure about that, it looked incidental, not intentional.

06-30-2018, 02:33 PM
penalty's in soccer are so lame.......of course players are going to bump into each other...Ref's can't be throwing those cards around like candy...Let the players play...........I think Soccer should adopt Hockey Rules...like the {Penalty Box} .....keep a player out of the game for a number of minutes...instead of a one on one kick into the net..............This is one of the reasons I don't really watch soccer...The other reason is all the fake injuries ................
France is clearly faster than Argentina, and may have had a better half. But Argentina had more possession.
Yeah, I do think France had the better half. I hope Argentina can step it up in the second half. France almost certainly has at least one more goal in them.
GOL Argentina. Nice bump from the Messi pass.
Nice Golazo by Pavard
All tied up.
Damn, had to happen. France is dominating once again.
Now France is up by one. Mbappe. Bad D by Argentina
Lordy... France another goal!
Goalkeeper could have stopped it...
Game over for Argentina. No D.
Brace for Mbappe. Can't teach speed.
You're right. France is just so much faster. It is the critical factor!
I didn't know anything about the Mbappe kid until this game. He's only 19. Good for PSG, but Monaco will want him back.
Messi had a few good chances, but France is playing good D in the box.
The kid is excellent. There'll be many World Cups in his future.
Aguero scores on a brilliant header, but maybe too late. Still need one more with only 2 minutes left in stoppage.
Game over. That equalizer by Pavard was the turn of the match, but the man of the match was the kid.
Congrats to France. They played a strong game!
Mbappe and Pavard were the work horses.
Uruguay / Portugal later...
That's a toss up for me. Maybe because Ronaldo is so brilliant, I don't see Portugal as much a "team".
Your odds from the other day had France over Argentina. That panned out.
Those same odds are very close for the Uruguay / Potugal game, with a slight edge to Uruguay at 20-1 vs. Portugal at 25-1.
Brazil 3-1
Spain 4-1
Belgium 13-2
France 8-1
England 8-1
Croatia 12-1
Argentina 12-1
Uruguay 20-1
Portugal 25-1
Colombia 30-1
Mexico 30-1
Switzerland 40-1
Russia 60-1
Sweden 80-1
Denmark 80-1
Japan 250-1
Uruguay with the first goal...Beautful header by Cavani.
Spectacular header by Cavani from a great pass from Suarez.
Uruguay has mostly owned the half, Portugal can't put anything together.
Yeah, Ronaldo was hardly ever involved, even though he was always there waiting for a decent cross.
They were really pressing finally. It was a completely different look.
What a spectacular game he is having!
The footing on this field is treacherous.
Cavani walked off field by Ronaldo. Good sportsmanship, or just saving time.
Game over. Cristiano Ronaldo and Messi out of the WC.
Uruguay goes forward. Cavani is the man of the match.
Uruguay / France on Friday.
Based on the play today, France should win, but we'll see.
We'll have to see if Cavani lightning can strike twice...
Less than 2 hours to the Spain / Russia match. I hope Spain ate their spinach (or maybe paella works in this instance). The last time Spain met Russia was in 2017, and they played to a 3-3 draw.
Go España!
Ramos goal! Spain up 1-0.
Actually, it was off Ignashevich, so they credit the oldest Russian player with Spain's goal.
Spain is dominating possession.
Dzyuba with a penalty kick score for Russia. Now 1-1. (Pique with the handball penalty.)
Second half has started. Spain had 71% possession time and 4 times as many passes in the first half. That kind of dominance should have translated to at least one more goal. Clearly, Spain needs to attack the goal more in this half.
Just got back.. those stats should be a rout for Spain...
Same this half... 76% possession time, 4-5 times the passes, but 3 shots for Spain vs. 1 for Russia. They're squandering opportunities.
This game better not go to penalties. At least they do the extra periods, not like the Copa America.
You're right... A penalty shoot out would not be a fitting end.
I'm glad they didn't call that possible penalty on that Spain free kick. There might have been a riot.
Ugh. Penalties coming up.
Not looking forward to this! It may be the only way Russia can win. Unfortunately, Spain just couldn't get poised for decent goal shots for the entire game.
There goes my bracket..actually my sister's. LOL.
Amazing save.
Drat...... Oh, well, congrats to Russia.
Biggest upset in the knockout phase ever. La Liga must be in massive pain... the stars of RM, Barcelona, and the Spanish team itself.
Yes, huge upset! Hard to believe with all the time that Spain (La Ligga plus) possessed the ball that they couldn't put together another goal.
Croatia / Denmark up next. Croatia shouldn't have a problem but after the Spain upset, who knows.
The twitter memes are hilarious. Germany, Argentina, Spain and Portugal playing for the Airport Cup. Putin in the VAR, Barca and RM bikes with their players... lol.
And now Croatia is behind the eightball.
Just got back. I see it is still tied at 1-1.
After the frantic first 5 minutes, settled down. No real big threats, slight edge to Croatia.
At the moment, they look pretty evenly matched.
I'm back again... this one is going et as well.
Moving into extra time...
No doubt on that foul in the box. Red Card and PK.
I guess they didn't red card Ericson.
I have a big lag compared to you!
Yeah, I'm watching via OTA.
Ah, that'll do it! You've probably already watched the penalty shootout...lol.
Not quite. :)
I'm multitasking watching NASCAR as well.
I check 'em both out, too. Was glad to see Harvick winning the 2nd stage.
............. DEN, CRO
Round 1: Miss, Miss (2 saves)
Round 2: Hit, Hit
Round 3: Hit, Hit
Round 4: Miss, Miss (2 saves)
Round 5: Miss, Hit
Barca player wins it for Croatia. LOL
And a Denmark save.... Man!
Croatia moves on to face Russia.
Brazil v. Mexico... It's election day in Mexico today, so the bars are closed. For sure... heavy drinking before Noon tomorrow.
I'm looking forward to watching Brazil again. So far the class in the KO has been France.
Fifteen minutes from Brazil / Mexico. We'll see if Brazil is the class act of the Knock Out stage.
An upset by Mexico won't be as big as yesterday's Russia, but would completely change the competition, like yesterday.
I'm still "upset" over yesterday's loss, and you're right on the magnitude of that upset.
Mexico is looking quite competitive so far.
It seems like the play has been mostly in the Brazil half of the field. Mexico looks nothing like it did in its last game.
Brazil is beginning to step it up. Neymar is finally getting involved.
Fun half. Hope it doesn't go to extra time.
Yeah, I've sure had my fill of shootouts!
Memo with a huge save... needed it.
Vela with the best shot so far by Mexico.
Should be quite a bit of stoppage time.
Brazil seals the deal. Dos a cero.
Neymar with the great pass to Firmino
He also deserves a drama award for writhing. lol
Yeah, he killed a lot of the clock though :)
Just tuned in to Belgium / Japan. Still 0-0.
Same here. Close calls against Belgium.
Belgium is dominating but nil - nil at the half.
Same here. Close calls against Belgium.
Yes, the last free kick was hard to fathom.
Holy cow... Japan score!! Harraguchi
Another Japanese goal! 2 - 0! Inui I believe...
Wow... I was making the daytona thread post, but those were awesome.
So much time though. Japan keeps pressing... good for them.
Belgium scores on a looper.
And now tied.... just like that.
OMG. The Japan GK had a couple of great saves.
Read your post and then saw the saves. Yes!
I doubt there will be much stoppage time.
Heartbreaker.... Belgium just scored at the end of stoppage time. Great game.
Unreal!!! Belgium wins it...
I feel really sorry for Japan. They played their hearts out.

Guys for anyone having issues with channels, here are some alternatives.
Spanish is on 8839 Telemundo (SD quaility)

Semi Final will be Uruguay vs Brazil.
Final will be Brazil vs Russia / Uruguay vs Russia. OR Brazil vs Croatia / Uruguay vs Croatia. These are the best 4 teams at the moment.
Tuning in late for Sweden / Switzerland. Still 0 - 0 at 33:00.
Most write-ups had things very close. In fact, I saw equal odds for Sweden, Switzerland and a 90' draw.

There you go. Sweden scores.
Let's see how it was scored.
-----------------------
Forsberg gets it.
Outstanding save by Olsen.
Well, that does it. Foul by Switzerland in the box with no time left in stoppage. Referee checking, but that should be it.
Yeah, the penalty kick seals the deal...
England / Colombia will be interesting...
No James Rodriguez. That will be hard for Colombia. Meanwhile , Harry Kane is rested.
Trippier wide on a free kick.
Three minutes of stoppage time.
England 1-0... Kane penalty kick!
Five minutes of stoppage.
