Vpn-worth it ?

I'm thinking about paying for a VPN service. is it worth it? Does it help? I heard sometimes internet provider can cause problems that's why I'm thinking about going with a VPN . I noticed a big drop out in my bandwidth especially at night. Any comments any help thank you
