Can 256 record just like 254?

I have an Avov TV Online 4, and I'm not a fan of the EPG guide interface. Also it doesn't have the capability to record.

I'm considering purchasing either a MAG 256 or 254. I prefer the 256 because it's has higher specs, and USB 3 support.

Is the 256 basically the same as the 254 but with better hardware?
Does it support all features of the 254?
Can it record to an external USB drive?

Recording is not enabled by the provider, so no chance of recording your out of luck
