MMA fighter Kimbo Slice, who was born in the Bahamas and grew up in Miami, was hospitalized Monday near his home in Coral Springs, TMZ Sports reported.
It was not clear Monday night why the 6-foot-2, 215 pound fighter — whose real name is Kevin Ferguson — was hospitalized and later died. Kimbo Slice rose to notoriety after posting a series of YouTube videos showing extreme street fights.
The CEO of Bellator MMA, Scott Coker, later confirmed the news and released a statement.
“We are all shocked and saddened by the devastating and untimely loss of Kimbo Slice, a beloved member of the Bellator family,” Coker said in the statement. “One of the most popular MMA fighters ever, Kimbo was a charismatic, larger-than-life personality that transcended the sport.
“Outside of the cage he was a friendly, gentle giant and a devoted family man. His loss leaves us all with extremely heavy hearts, and our thoughts and prayers are with the entire Ferguson family and all of Kimbo’s friends, fans, and teammates.”
A call to Coral Springs police late Monday night was not returned.
