My Mag 250 box worked well but provider increasing annual costs unreasonably, and not providing any support service. I paid more than twice the retail cost of the box provided, and the annual servicing was increased 100% over 3 years. I know that I do not need a provider for my limited TV watching. I have programmed another STP myself. Now I have an expensive box that I cannot reset. It just keeps coming to the same message "Your STB is blocked. Please call provider." Is it possible the provider has put something into the system to prevent the box being re-used? If so, is there a way round it?

Have you removed the provider address from the portal screen? If not remove, reboot. Also can do a reset from settings.
This ofcourse if you can get in to your setings menu.

I think you are right. He knew what he was doing! Very frustrating. I guess I just buy another box and put in the firmware myself. More control.
