How long has this service been around?

Just out of curiosity, does anyone know how long this service has been around? I have only known about it since June or so, but from what I've read it's been around for years. I've not been able to find anything on its age.

The service for IPTV started testing around October and went to pay service last July. The service that has been around for years is IKS, which is satellite.

Okie dokie, that makes sense. Thanks fellas. By the way, what exactly was/is IKS? I've seen that acronym around the forums for a while but I've never been sure what it is? All I can find is that it's a private server of some sort. It's just through satellite? How is it received?
